Service Description: High resolution land cover dataset for Los Angeles, CA. Eight land cover classes were mapped: (1) tree canopy, (2) grass/shrub, (3) bare earth, (4) water, (5) buildings, (6) roads, (7) other paved surfaces, and (8) tall shrubs. Esri’s Imagery Team and Professional Services Team were contracted to produce an updated land cover dataset using LARIAC5 (2017) imagery. The Imagery Team utilized new deep learning capabilities in ArcGIS Pro to generate our final product. Deep learning is a type of machine learning that is based on artificial neural networks, and in this case, a deep learning model was trained with images of different land cover classes, processing the images through layers within the neural network, and then finding patterns and features in the data required to classify the imagery.
